Home / What I do

So, if you’re trying to figure out precisely what I do, whether or not you should contact me, and what to expect if you do, I’ve created some scenarios below that should help you to get there. But if you’re still not sure, please get in contact – because you never know.

We should have a chat, if…

  • You have a design project (UX) and need an extra head and pair of hands
  • You’re designing a new product or service and could use a bit of external design direction
  • You are building a design team and could use some help assessing and shaping it
  • You are re-structuring a design function and would benefit from an objective design leader
  • You’re a start-up preparing for a funding round and could use an experienced design lead
  • You’re a start-up who wants to mature the design function of your growing organisation
  • You could use some design coaching and mentoring from an experienced design leader

You have an experience design project (UX) and require an extra head and pair of hands

Perhaps you have a design team, or maybe not. You have work to do though, and you know that you need someone who can help you to think it through and deliver. As an experienced design lead, I’ll be able to help you organise and understand the extent of work to be done, conduct design activities, and deliver into your development process.

Skills: agility, collaboration, customer and stakeholder interviews, design specifications, design team management, expectation setting, lean, lightweight prototypes, lightweight research, personas, product design, requirements definition, sketching, storyboarding, UX design, wireframes, workshops

You’re designing a new product or service and could use a bit of external design direction

Your team are starting a larger piece of work around designing a new product or service proposition. While an extra pair of hands would help, your team might also benefit from an experienced senior designer, who can help shape the project, and challenge, shape and deliver against requirements. I can work alongside of – and lead – design teams delivering product and service propositions. If brought in early enough, I can help discover, define and shape the new proposition.

Skills: agility, collaboration, customer and stakeholder interviews, design leadership, design specifications, design team management, empathy, expectation setting, experience design strategy, experience maps, lean, lightweight prototypes, lightweight research, personas, product design, proposition design, requirements definition, service design, service maps and blueprints, sketching, storyboarding, UX design, wireframes, workshops

You are building a design team and could use some help assessing and shaping it

You currently have no design team, or a small mix of in-house and contract designers. You are now ready to build a formal design function – though you may also need to convince internal stakeholders why you need this capability. I’ve built or enhanced a number of organisation’s design functions – including my own. I assess existing capabilities, gaps and needs, and recommend how to structure a team that integrates with your delivery model. I can help identify talented individuals and assist you with embedding your design function into your organisation.

Skills: agility, coaching, collaboration, delivery models, design leadership, design method development, design team management, empathy, expectation setting, experience design strategy, mentoring, organisational design, roadmap review, sketching, stakeholder interviews, stakeholder mapping, training, workshops

You are re-structuring a design function and would benefit from an objective design leader

You have an established design function. You’re making proactive structural changes and improvements to your business or perhaps recurring stakeholder or customer issues are driving a need for change. You could use an objective point of view to fully understand the implications of change. I’ve built, run and re-structured small to large research, design and CX teams. I run capability and skills reviews, assess structure, design method and delivery models resulting in the design of new organisational structures and models and recommendations for better integration with delivery models.

Skills: agility, coaching, collaboration, delivery models, design leadership, design method development, design team management, empathy, expectation setting, experience design strategy, lean, mentoring, organisational design, sketching, stakeholder interviews, stakeholder mapping, storyboarding, training, workshops

You’ve built a team who have taken you to the precipice of an investment round. You have KPI’s to hit (increasing Customers, revenue, awareness or penetration in the marketplace) and you could use an experienced designer to help get you over the line. I’ve worked with a number of start-ups, each with different needs, team structures and levels of maturity. I can help you to focus your roadmap, product or service, update your UI or deliver an experience design strategy that helps you to demonstrate your potential to investors.

Skills: agility, coaching, collaboration, customer and stakeholder interviews, design leadership, design specifications, design team management, empathy, expectation setting, experience design strategy, experience maps, lean, lightweight prototypes, lightweight research, mentoring, personas, product design, proposition design, requirements definition, roadmap review, service design, service maps and blueprints, sketching, start-ups, storyboarding, UX design, wireframes, workshops

You’re a start-up who wants to mature the design function of your growing organisation

You’re maturing into a young company. You’ve seen growth in your product or service and it’s time to mature your proposition. This includes ensuring your design team reflects where you want to go, has the right level of skills and capabilities and is working in the right way. You would like to bring in an experienced design leader to assess your design capability and recommend a way forward. I’ve built, run and re-structured small to large (a couple of hundred people) research, design and CX teams. I run capability and skills reviews, assess structure, design method and delivery models resulting in designing new organisational structures and models and recommendations for better integration with delivery models.

Skills: agility, coaching, collaboration, delivery models, design leadership, design method development, design team management, empathy, expectation setting, lean, mentoring, organisational design, roadmap review, sketching, stakeholder interviews, stakeholder mapping, start-ups, storyboarding, training, workshops

You could use some design coaching and mentoring from an experienced design leader

Sometimes it just helps to have someone experienced on hand for mentoring or coaching, to design and deliver training to your teams, or to help your teams work better together. Insight derived from experience, and a plain language common sense approach can go a long way towards helping you or your team to make better decisions. I have experience working with individuals at all levels helping to mentor on the importance of design to their organisations. I can run 1:1 sessions, work with groups of individuals, cross-functional teams, leadership teams and others. I’m down to earth, social, a good listener and have rebuilt dysfunctional design teams into functioning, high performing teams.

Skills: agility, coaching, collaboration, delivery models, design leadership, design method development, design team management, empathy, expectation setting, lean, mentoring, organisational design, sketching, stakeholder interviews, stakeholder mapping, start-ups, storyboarding, training, workshops
