Storyteller, fiction writer, aspiring novelist and poet
As I’ve decided that my online and social media experience going forward will be a singular one, with no separation of borders, it would be remiss to ignore the fact that I am also an aspiring novelist. I’ve been interested in writing from an early age. For a long time I felt some strange compulsion to separate my being an engineer (in the early years), my work in digital (most of my career), from my desire to be a writer. But being an engineer, storyteller and designer are all aspects of who I am, and strangely as the years have passed, I’ve found more and more similarities and parallels between all of these different aspects of my life.
Between 1995 and 1997 I attended the Emerson College Creative Writing program where I attained a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. During my time at Emerson I taught undergraduate writing, designed the Emerson College Writing, Literature and Publishing website, and taught web design courses at a local community college. I also wrote and performed Slam poetry, wrote literary poetry and short fiction, and published some of my work.
Having taken a long break, in the last several years I’ve come back to my writing and am now working on a novel – with several others in planning. I’ve learned that much of the design method and techniques I’ve learned over the years are fully applicable to planning and writing a novel. I will use some of my blogging time here to talk about design and writing, and also to publish some occasional work.
If you are an aspiring or practicing writer, or have struggled to merge career with writing, please feel free to get in touch. I look forward to beginning to live a more converged life. I’ll let you know how it goes!
