What's in a story?

Digital Product, Research, Design

It’s rare you can say that you’ve worked in an industry since its inception. I’ve been working full-time in digital since 1994, and arguably, through running old school bulletin boards have been working with the internet since about 1983. It’s a long time to remain in one industry.

But it’s an industry that has gone through incredible evolution–and revolution–is still changing, and in many ways is still in its infancy. So though its been long, its never been boring.

I’ve had the privilege to have delivered one of the first e-commerce sites on Microsoft e-commerce server, and debuted by Bill Gates back in 2000, worked alongside of Ray Tomlinson at BBN Technologies (blame him for email), and overseen the delivery of the first data.gov.uk website, part of an effort by then U.K. PM Gordon Brown and supported by Sir Tim Berners-Lee to help the U.K. Government open up data (I also worked with his Open Data Institute team to design the first Open Data Institute Summit site).

I’ve project and program managed teams, learned to be a designer through hard graft, worked for agencies and companies, founded design agencies in the U.S. (in 2000) and U.K. (in 2004), delivered award-winning digital products and services and worked with some of the biggest global brands. Since 2009 I have predominantly worked as a consultant, having earned my spurs through doing, practicing and crafting, and now work with companies to help shape leaders, practices, product and service vision.

More recently I’ve begun distilling my experience into courses which I’ve taught in-person in London over the last year. I’m now working on remote moderated and unmoderated versions of those courses which will be available in 2024. I love working with people and teams, and focus predominantly on design, research and product functions, how to create them, shape them, reshape them, improve them, and better integrate them.
