Introduction
A large B2B global FS software platform developer found itself in increasingly competitive spaces. Even in the niche markets in which it operated, competitors were beginning to deliver better alternatives. They needed a way to enhance their products and their offer.
I was engaged to explore building a new design function. At the time, they had a couple of designers and over 100 products. The vast majority of design was performed by business analysts and developers.
Working with an in-house client, who was a major design advocate,, we set out to identify the needs of the organization and design a practice that had representative capabilities across visual design, user experience design, research, service design, and design operations.
Our plan was to create a central team to act as a catalyst for design and establish principles and standards around design. After an acquisition, we contributed to the establishment of a product design team in their business unit while we built a central practice in parallel.
And as happens with organizations, things changed. Leadership swapped around, support waned and the effort required a pivot. The initial goal however remained intact: introduce design to the organization. Though central design’s focus changed, and the team worked less centrally and more embedded on specific products, the seeds of design had been sown and continues to make headway in the business.
Sometimes you have to do the hard work and accept a pivot to deliver change.
